LIMA

What is Lima like?

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Today, Lima is regarded as the culinary destination of Latin America. The reasons for this are numerous, including the passion, expertise, and skill of those dedicated to the craft—chefs, cooks, and sommeliers. The knowledge passed down through generations shapes their creations, which incorporate ingredients from a variety of landscapes, regions, and climates obtained from the sea, the mountains, and the jungle—sometimes using these ingredients on their own, other times combining them—but always with the same purpose: to offer a culinary masterpiece. This is why Lima is now recognized worldwide as THE CULINARY DESTINATION.

Duration: 3 days.

We invite you to explore some of the places that were part of Romovi Top Travel Experience in Lima.

El Mercado

El Mercado is undoubtedly a modern classic of Peruvian cuisine and one of the flagship establishments of the renowned chef Rafael Osterling. Specializing in seafood, it offers an international perspective that successfully bridges different culinary cultures, all while staying true to its impeccable high-end gastronomy. It’s essentially a Peruvian cevichería of great distinction.

El Mercado is an unpretentious spot where the ambiance plays a key role (as it does in all of Rafael’s venues), reflecting the personality and vision of the chef who leads the group. No restaurant is chosen by so many people based solely on its atmosphere; it’s the magic in the kitchen and the exquisite culinary creations of Rafael that truly captivate diners. This perfect combination has elevated El Mercado to such a level that it’s impossible not to savour every dish. The proof is in the fact that it’s packed every day, with guests waiting in line for a table.

El Mercado opens exclusively at lunchtime, much like many similar restaurants in Lima, making it an essential stop for anyone visiting the city during the midday hours.

Costanera 700

There’s a unique charm when stepping into Costanera 700, a sense of being at home, even though it’s a new space and is technically classified as a “restaurant”—a label that feels cold in comparison to the warmth of the place.

Upon arrival, the staff greets guests with an immense charisma, guiding them through the sleek black dining rooms, with reflective surfaces and a focus on meticulous detail and order.

The restaurant’s mystique becomes clear when you learn that its creator, Humberto Sato, was a pioneer in the evolution of Peruvian-Japanese cuisine in Peru and one of the founders of Nikkei cuisine. Costanera 700 selects the finest Peruvian ingredients, blending them with classic Japanese culinary techniques, resulting in one-of-a-kind creations like ceviches, Ikizukuri-style sashimi, and salt-baked chita.

In 2025, the restaurant will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Though Humberto Sato is no longer physically present, his children continue his legacy, which remains as strong and relevant as ever—a testament to the lasting impact of his vision.

Astrid y Gastón

The restaurant is the beautiful culmination of the love story between Gastón Acurio, the renowned chef and global ambassador of Peruvian cuisine, and Astrid Gutsche, also an amazing chef born in Germany and a specialist in cacao and chocolate.

This very love is reflected in their cuisine meticulously crafted yet wonderfully contemporary. The menu takes diners on a journey through the diverse Peruvian flavours, reimagining traditional dishes with the artistry of haute cuisine.

As if that weren’t enough, the restaurant is located in the historic Casa Hacienda Moreyra, a 17th-century countryside residence that invites guests to step back in time and immerse themselves in the history of Peru. The stunning architecture, with its vast rooms, soaring ceilings, and walls overflowing with art, is sure to leave visitors in awe.

What truly sets “Astrid y Gastón” apart, however, is the exceptional service. Every detail of the dining experience is enhanced by expert culinary advice and sommeliers, ensuring a complete and harmonious connection with the moment and the pleasure underlying every bite.

At the heart of its innovative, ever-evolving dishes is chef and visionary Arlette Eulert Checa, who has rightfully earned her place as one of the leading female chefs in Peru and has secured a spot for her restaurant on numerous prestigious lists.

Upon entering, the soft lighting and concrete floors immediately set the tone for the essence of Matria, which translates to “Mother Earth.” The vibrant, colorful, and harmonious dishes reflect this connection, and tasting them brings to life the seasonality of the ingredients, all while honoring environmental sustainability and respecting closed seasons.

Matria is undoubtedly a gateway to both Peruvian and international gastronomy, offering an exceptional opportunity to discover the region’s unique ingredients.

Chef Arlette is intimately involved in every detail and often personally greets guests with her signature warmth, making every dining experience truly unforgettable.

Hanzo

Labelling Hanzo as a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine doesn’t fully capture its more than 10 years of pioneering influence on the growth of Nikkei gastronomy, both in Peru and internationally. It’s the restaurant’s continuous innovation that makes it so distinctive, always drawing in new and loyal guests.

With a focus on delivering the highest quality, Hanzo creates dishes using the finest Peruvian ingredients, blending them seamlessly with traditional Eastern techniques. This approach has allowed it to not only win the favour of local food lovers but also captivate international visitors.

Maido

We can confidently say that Maido is arguably the ultimate Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei restaurant. A visit to Maido is not just a meal; it’s a memorable experience, one that feels almost essential in life. Behind this remarkable journey is chef and founder Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura, born in Lima, Peru, with roots from Osaka, Japan, who leads us through this culinary adventure.

It’s a fusion of both countries, where Japanese techniques meet Peruvian ingredients—a culinary dialogue that unfolds before us. After more than 15 years, while the menu evolves, the core philosophy remains intact: to serve the finest seasonal ingredients, complemented by exceptional service that goes above and beyond.

The restaurant’s design is characterized by the use of ropes and a sleek black base, inviting guests to pause and appreciate the simplicity, setting the stage for the extraordinary experience that awaits in the kitchen. It’s a tribute to the philosophy by which less can truly be more.
